3 Mar: Cathy Dzerefos: From Edible Wasps to Munchable Mopane

If you have a taste for adventure — literally— join us next week for a talk by former ESSA stalwart Cathy Dzerefos, who will enlighten us on the benefits of eating insects. Scientists say the practice, known as entomophagy, offers a solution to food insecurity globally, and an estimated two billion people are already regularly munching on as many as 1,900 different species.

Africa is no exception, with termites, locusts and of course nutritious mopane worms on the menu in many rural areas. Cathy has researched the topic extensively, both on a theoretical and practical level, and thinks that it presents possibilities for some truly off-the-beaten-track epicurean holidays for ecotourists. She has travelled to Japan to sample their national delicacy edible wasps.

I hope to see you at Cathy’s talk, which will be entertaining and enlightening!
